Alright folks, what do you think? How is it?

FEATURE IDEA

Tyler, Thanks for developing such a useful program! So far, I like the way it works but there is one possible issue that I'm seeing.

I've created one message to send out when I ignore a caller. However (this is with a Sprint Treo 650) when I ignore a caller, I'm not actually able to maneuver the d-pad to select the message. I have to use my fingernail/stylus etc. I do notice that if I use the keyboard and select the first letter that the message starts with, it will be selected. Still, it might be useful to allow us to use the dpad to get to messages without having to resort to the keyboard.

Thanks again for taking the time to create this utility!

Thank you so much; this is a great little program. I have a couple of suggestions.

(1) I agree with PaulC (about having better 5-way control in your dialog's pop-up menu), but even more, I would like SharkMsg to remember the last SMS message I used, and pre-select that one in the pop-up list.

(2) If someone without caller ID calls, SharkMsg responds the same, even though there is no way for it to send an SMS to someone without caller ID. It would be nice if SharkMsg didn't show up at all in this case (or maybe if it showed up but the "Send" button was grayed out, and there was a message that SharkMsg can't send an SMS to a phone number it doesn't have).

(3) It would be nice if cut, copy, and paste all worked in the SMS message edit dialog.

Thanks again for a really great utility.

(I'm using an unlocked GSM 600, btw).

Billy

It looks really cool, but the 5 way navigation on the drop down list doesn't work for the first selection. I have to put my finger on the screen to select the drop down. Then it is fine. Keep up the good work.

How does SharkMsg handle calls from landline numbers? Will it still provide the SMS prompts?

I found something really interesting while testing this app. I called myself from my home landline and I sent a text message with SharkMsg using my Sprint Treo 650. And guess what? My home land phone rang and it read me my text message. Really cool...!!! It says it is a Sprint service called Text to landline and they charge 10 cents per message. I wonder if it is part of the text messaging package.

gosh... now i really have to think between getting the treo (palm os) or just the SE K750i... decisions... decisions!!!

Thank for such a useful app. It would be great if you could add "Silent" to the "Answer" / "Ignore" screen. When you select "Ignore" it is clear to the caller that you dont want to talk to him. It is great that you can send an SMS to explain why, but having the option to silent the phone and not sending an SMS would also help to tell the caller "I left my phone somewhere".

Thanks again,
Jorge

Alright, thanks guys. Let's start a list then of things to fix/add:

1) Five Way drop down support
2) Auto choose the last Msg you sent in the dropdown
3) Option to only send messages to certain area codes (e.g. i live in NYC, so i would limit it to only 646 and 917 numbers)
4) don't pop up Send SMS? form if the number is No Caller ID

anything else?

cheers, tyler

I have found that if my touch screen is disabled, I'm unable to choose a response. I can choose "send" or "don't send" but can't choose from the drop down(please choose) section.
Normally, I have my touch screen disabled so I won't make a mistake and answer a call that I don't want to answer. In order to use Sharkmsg, I have to enable my touch screen.
Can this be changed to work with touch screen disabled?
Thanks
Dwayne

Hey Tyler, Kudos to you for the excellent sharkmsg app ! It works like a charm when I don't want to receive any calls. Keep up the good work!

Hi Dwayne! Absolutely! As soon as the 5 way drop down support is added (number 1 in the above list) there should be no problems!

best regards, tyler

P.S.
1. This is a great application. It saves so much time. Thank you.

2. I'm with Sprint. I have a Treo650. I was wondering if Sharkmsg can be config. to start a little faster? Or is it my serves provider that causes it to take 25 seconds to start. Which at this point the call goes to vmail and treo's options to call back or text back shows up(which has a few more taps to go through). it would be great to have it show up sooner and then have just the choices and "don't send" or "cancel" show up.
Just a thought.

Hey D.McDaniel! What do you mean about the startup time?

thanks regards, tyler

Great, Great program. I agree with D. McDaniel. If I hit the red phone button on the treo650 to ignore call it goes right to voice mail. If I ignore and let phone ring, sharkmsg will not display its option until after the call has gone to voice mail. Maybe a setting to make sharkmsg come up after 1st, 2nd, or 3rd ring. Thank you for a nice program, and its free!!!!

if I am on a call and get a second call in (call waiting)sharkmsg will not let me send an sms to the other caller letting them know I am on the other line (or what ever sms I have pre-defined.)

Is it just me or does anyone else have this problem?

Hi Tyler,

one remark to #3 on your fix list (Option to only send messages to certain area codes): the restriction shouldn't be to specific area codes but to specific (one or more) phone number beginnings.

European phone numbers have no specific phone number format like the US or Canada.

Regards, Stefan

Tyler:

I told you!! The masses are gonna LOVE this app like I do!!

Nice work, bro!!

SMEGGIE :D

I've read over all the suggestions and don't want to be redundant, however I think I have a better solution to the "no caller id" issue. Namely, in my Treo, I record my contacts' numbers in the proper field. ie: my wife has a cell, a biz lines, and our home numeber in her contact. So when she calls me, it says "Bree (M)" for her mobile, "Bree (H)" for her home number, and "Bree (W)" for her work number. Sending an SMS to a landline typically won't work. Sending one to a user you don't know (no caller id) can have interesting results. I'm thinking it would be best to have it read out of the address book. If there's no caller id, you get no SharkMSG option. If they're not already in your contacts, so all you see is a number, you also get no SharkMSG option. But if they're your contacts, then you can get the SharkMSG option and you can choose to use it if say it says "Bree (M)" [her mobile number], but not to use it if says say "Bree (H)" [a landline].

And I do agree that it would be nice to be able to SMS the second caller in a call waiting-type solution.

Alright i've just had a talk with a CMDA user (dcopperfield, thanks!) and i think i've fixed the issue with the 2nd call ignore bug!

new release tomorrow hopefully. i will also address the No Caller ID bug, but for that to happen i need to get a call from a no caller id number so unless someone knows how to do that...

regards, tyler

Shark- just call yourself from another cell phone and hit *67 before entering your number... that should remove the caller ID information.

Thanks everyone! v1.1 released (you can install over 1.0):

-Fixed Ignore 2nd Call bug
-Fixed No Caller ID bug

cheers, tyler

ps: so, what feature is most requested?

If I call someone and hit hang up before they answer, the SharkMsg dialog will appear. This shouldn't occur. Also, if I get a call but don't answer or ignore the call the SharkMsg dialog will appear until the caller goes into VM or terminates the call. It then disappears.

Note: SprintPCS offers a service called "Text to Landline". I ignored a call (for the heck of it) from my home number when calling my Treo 650 on Sprint.

I got a message from Sprint on my Treo 650, "Your message was addressed to a landline # 555-555-5555. 4 a limited time send msgs to a landline # using Sprint Text to Landline service! Std rates apply.

On the home phone, I received a call from an automated service indicating that I received a text message from #555-555-5555 and then it read the message to me.

On the Treo, I got another message that read, "Your message was successfully delivered to a person at 555-555-5555. Thanks for using Text to Landline".

Pretty cool, but what will it cost me? I am in the Detroit MI market.

On the receiveing end of the text message the person receiving your text shows the message from a an unknown sender or private caller. They than can not reply back to you. Otherwise everything is great.

Hi Tyler,

Don't forget the version info between versions :) 1.1 still shows as 1.0 in the About box (yeah, I know this is trivial, but it also helps you in bug testing)

Thanks,
- jp

Yet another life saving Palm program from Tyler--I love it. I just wanted to 2nd two previously mentioned feature requests...I realize these are probably either/or requests.

1. "It would be great if you could add "Silent" to the "Answer" / "Ignore" screen." Futhermore, if SharkMsg could pop-up as an option even if the call isn't "Ignored" but if it just runs through the rings and goes to Vmail on its own.

2. "If I ignore and let phone ring, sharkmsg will not display its option until after the call has gone to voice mail. Maybe a setting to make sharkmsg come up after 1st, 2nd, or 3rd ring."

Really looking forward to future revisions (not to say the current one isn't GREAT) it seems this program has lots of possibilities.

Roameo

Hi Tyler,

Thanks for the quick update!

For what it's worth (on my GSM Treo 600 with SharkMsg in RAM, not on the SD card), I had to "disable" and then re-"enable" SharkMsg 1.1 before it would work.

I installed 1.1 right over 1.0, and 1.0 was enabled at the time. 1.1 acted as if it weren't installed. Once I toggled it from enabled to disabled and back, all is well.

Hoping this info helps others, and prevents a bunch of "1.1 doesn't work" messages. (Assuming others run into the same problem).

Billy

Tyler conratulations on being such a well respected, and sought after Palm developer. You produce top of the line apps, and sharkmsg is only one of them. I am thrilled I got to work with you on SharkTXfix. Be very proud of yourself, the Palm community thanks you for all your awesome work! Keep it up!!

USER COMMENTS

thanks very much for this free app! Kudos to you Tyler et al for a job well done!

im from the Philippines, and ive been looking all over the web for an app like this much similar to "SMS Assistant" (http://eerola.home.comcast.net/tuomas/download.html), ever since i migrated from using a Nokia phone.

Although, unlike SMS Assitant, you have to actually end/ignore the call for SharkMsg to work. Is there a way wherein if i just let the ringing go on until the caller decides to end the call, that SharkMsg will automatically send a message to that caller/missed call?

im new to the palmOne world so hopelfully you guys can let me know if this is possible.

Cheers!

USER COMMENT:

Thanks a lot and congratualtions for coming up with this wonderful app in such a short time. Great work all around releasing "shark msg" and "sharkTXfix"... i know it isn't abt the other two apps here but i must tell u that i was considering buying a TX buth then dropped it coz of the home icon thing (i'm a very fussy person :p ), and now thanx to u i'm thinking of upgrading my T3 again!!

one request for the sharkmsg app though, just as a few others have suggested, i too think it'd be gr8 to have a silent button as well.

a very big thanx once again.. and keep up the good work!

if i call somebody then hangup before it connects sharkmsg screen appears.

Hey! Okay, the calling then hanging up bug i'm pretty sure i can fix.

can someone explain the Silent thing more to me? i don't get it.

also i'm not really sure about this: "If I ignore and let phone ring, sharkmsg will not display its option until after the call has gone to voice mail" can someone explain?

thanks! cheers, tyler

Hello! Unfortunately SharkMsg is only for Treo 600/650.

GREAT PRODUCT, something I didn't know I needed until I heard about the MS Treo. Every since, I was wanting this function and your created it! Working great on my Treo 650 GSM.

Cheers.

Tyler, if you let the treo650 ring, sharkmsg will not display before the person is directed to voice mail unless you hit the ignore button (red phone button). If you do hit the red button than the person is directed to voice mail as you select the sms you want to send. I use the Sprint Network. I think I have explained the

"If I ignore and let phone ring, sharkmsg will not display its option until after the call has gone to voice mail" can someone explain?"

Frank

Tyler, Great job! Thanks for updating the program to allow the 5 way nav to pull down the desired text message. Would it also be possible to allow the 5 way to also scroll through the message choices and selec the desired one?
Thanks for a great program!
Tony

Hi Tyler, I have the same concern as Todd. Its also best to have SharkMsg send an SMS to a "missed call" number even without user intervention or pressing the ignore/end button. Say, for example, if i left my phone in my backpack/locker, SharkMsg will just send a message after the ringing has timed-out.

Thanks.

Hi Tyler,

Can you make the sms message sent by SharkMSG go to the sent messages folder of the Treo 650 messaging app?

I am currently using SharkNAV (Trial) and not even that can help in selecting between the saved replies.

If I am slow to pull out the Treo while it is ringing Sharkmsg has already popped up and is covering the caller ID on my Sprint Treo 650. Can the Sharkmsg box be lowered enough to allow the caller id to be visible so I can decide if I want to send a SMS or not.

I'm still having problems with a Treo 650 selecting the message I want to send using the 5way.
Also could you increase the length of time before this app times out, I find that by the time I have selected the message SharkMsg has shut down.

Ps A bit more polish and I'd be happy to happy for this.

Sorry, the above should have read:
I'd be happy to PAY for this.

that is great software, can add. function :
1. set auto send
2. per set message
thansk..

First, WOW! :-)

Just a teeny bug:

When I go into SharkMsg, and go to add a new entry, the caps lock doesn't work for the first character. If I type a letter and backspace, it does.

Hi - nice job. One request: can you make the Send/Don't Send dialog align flush with the bottom of the screen? It puts the buttons closer to where most people hold the device and looks a little better because there isn't anything peeking out at the bottom.
Again - nice work!

i am VERY impressed with this application - even more impressed with the fact that you are not charging for this -

How can I send you some money to show my appreciation?

Just installed Sharkmsg on my unlocked GSM Treo 650 and it won't pop up when I receive a phone call? I'm on Cingular, would that have anything to do with it?

great idea ! but it crashes on GSPDA XPlore M68...

Found this from Mytreo.net. AWESOME program. Like someone else said, I didn't know I wanted this until I heard about it. Now I love it.

My only request so far would be to also ask for an "Auto-Reply" message that could be set. I would idealy like two.

1. This one is for a missed call where I was simply not around or didn't have the phone with.

2. This one would be active when the phone had the ringer turned off. This way I could let the caller know that I simply didn't feel the phone vibrate.

Thanks again.

Great Idea

Same problem here tyler.... the menu doesn't pop-up until the call is transferred into voicemail. I am using a treo 600 on the Sprint network, but my office mate who is using the 650 on Verizon is having the same issue.

Any input is greatly appreciated as i love this idea for a program, and will gladly pay for it or make a contribution

Thanks

Thanks for a truly useful utility, and thanks for being so generous with your technical expertise!

I agree with the earlier question. Is it possible to adjust the size or position of the pop up. I have noticed that the program works so fast that I cannot see who is calling.

This program orks great and is a joy to have. Thanks.

I have been using it for only a day so if I am missing something, sorry.

I noticed that when I get a call, I can pick up on it, talk to the person, and then when I hangup, the send/don't send box pops up? Even though I answered the call.

I am using a T600 on Verizon with the 1.1 version from above.

Thanks

First I wanted to say this is a great app. I have been using this for a couple of days, and I love it however I think I might have found another bug.

I downloaded the version 1.1 listed above, and installed it. I first went to the about screen and found that I am running version v1.0? So I am not sure if I actually have the correct version, or if the download I am pulling is incorrect. Anyhow my situation is that if I get a call that I missed my phone will still ring showing the send don't send message for about 15 seconds after the call has already gone into voicemail. I also do not see the popup until after the call has either been ignored or missed. Is this normal, or could I actually be on the wrong version entirely? Thanks Much!

Treo650 - Sprint Network

The zip file I just dowloaded (Oct 10, 6:00pm MDT) contains v. 1.0, not 1.1.

Thanks for this app. :) GOOD JOB! Will this work for the Tungsten W? :)

For those having the "not poping up until it goes to voice mail" problem, are you actually hitting the ignore button? It's not supposed to pop up until you choose to ignore the call.

For those who are asking for a way to initiate it when you have your screen guard turned on, have you tried hitting your red off button? When a call ringing the off button funcions as the ignore button (so it will make SharkMsg open).

I'm on a Treo 650, and it seems to be working great for me, with the exception of not being able to use the 5-way to select which msg. The thing I would really like out of it is the option to automatically set a reminder to call the person back. Maybe it could automatically make a Task in your Task List, with an alarm set (the alarm would be a different ammount of time away, depending on the type of message you select). Sound feasable?

Thanks,
Jacob H.

Very nice and useful program! SMS is good of course, but it would be much better if I could record a voice message and a blocked caller could hear it. With the possibility to record personal messages for different phone numbers.
As for SharkMsg, you should make it to operate fully in automatic mode, without need to reject call manually, and with different filters (something like what BuzzOff makes).

Thanks!
Sergey

I have tried it, but when I download it, it is still the version 1.0(in the 'about')and not the version 1.1

Excellent App!!!
Congratulations, nice job!.. I have just one problem:
When I receive a second call If I'm talking, appears the answer/ignore buttons, If I ignore the call, the second call is sent to the voicemail (as expected), and appears the sharkmsg popup and I can send the sms message, but is received to the first call cell phone, not the ignored call....

Somebody has the same behaviour?

Regards,
Demetrio

Great Job Tyler,

I have been using SharkMsg for several days on my Sprint/T600 and have to tell you that it is awesome for a v1.0(1). Interestingly, I have been requesting this feature from many of the palm developers of Treo utilities for well over a year (Hobbyist w/ Butler, Velocityware w/ CallFilter, and several others), but they have been unable to 'crack the code' and bring it to market! After I saw this demonstrated on the Palm Treo 700W launch webinar I choked. Job well done.

Without being redundant on bugs/feature adds, I do want to re-enforce one.... Auto Responder. This would be a very strong addition. Ideally, in a meeting or on a concall or webinar, a user should be able to set SharkMsg to Auto Respond with a previously saved message without touching the phone. Obviously, this could be used in all sorts of scenarios and could be buit upon in cases where you only want an SharkMsg Autoresponder SMS to go to those in your addy book under category "Work" saying I'm on Vacation this week", etc.

Once again Great Job. Look forward to sending you a few bucks for your hard work. This one stacks up there with DA (Directory Assistant) as one of the mose functional utilities out there.

Bobby Pierce

When will the next update be? : )

I tried loading the 1.1 update but "about" still shows it as being 1.0. I even deleted the old app to no avail. Is the "about" just not showing the correct version?

I like this a lot! I use it all the time. Way cool!

If you use LaunchX Info Gadget it reports that the latest V1.0 is actually V1.1, so I think the answer is Yes the download version that show V1.0 is actually V1.1

:-)

Cool app... thanks very much.

1) DPad support would be great.
2) Being able to pick a Default msg that's pre-selected (i.e. I should just be able to press "send" to have it send the default message without having to pick it first) would be great.

Q: Will SharkMsg launch by itself in the background after a treo reset?

Q: it'd be nice to be sent an email when the app gets updated...

This is a great app Tyler, congrats and thanks for making it free! I am noticing one issue...the SharkMsg pops up ANY time I hang up a call as well as if I ignore one.

Hey all I found a way that 5 way navigation WORKS when selecting your message. Yes It works!!! When you go to select your message hit the middle button to open the menu option with the list of messages. All you need to do is hit the first letter of the message title from the keyboard. (If you have a message that is titled "Busy" hit B on the keypad. If you have one that is "Meeting" hit the M and so on.) This will then highlight that message. Once you do that you can then scroll through the other messages if you need to.

On a side note I too have found that if I end the call before the other person hangs up, the send message window pops up.

This app is great!

Sorry Tyler - but can't get it to work on my Treo650. I've got my messages installed, tapped the enable button. For incoming calls, I tap 'ignore' but it then goes to my voicemail - not yr program. Help?

Great application!

How about adding auto response.. at certain times, or certain call groups have the program auto reject the call and send a default message.

There is a bug, i can't choose which Message to send when my Touch screen is Disabled Only The "SEND" "DON'T SEND" buttons are responding to the 5-way nav
(And the Touch scren is always disabled when answering a call)

This is great. It must be very satisfying to prove MS wrong and do this functionality on a 650!

One bug I found ... when the Treo soft resets, having SharkMsg installed stops the 650 (VZW, 1.04 ROM) from automatically turning the phone on at reset.

My suggestions (many just re-iterating some above):

1) Ability to set a reply message as the default.
2) Ability to set a preference to launch only if the number is recognized and is a "mobile" number in the phone book. No point in launching if you can't send an SMS.
3) Move the pop-up to be aligned with the bottom of the screen so it's easier to press the buttons with one hand operation.
4) Add 5-way support for selecting the actual message (right now it just opens the pulldown).

THANKS!

Great idea that needs to be developed - it would need to recognize calls from cell phone and be able to respond automatically if needed. This version did not worked on my Treo 650. gave me an error message first time I tried to "enable" and never worked after that... I guess I'll wait for next version or better software all together.
